Attack on Sri Lankan cricket team in Pakistan
On 3 Mar 2009, the LTTE attacked the Sri Lankan cricket team in Lahore, at Gaddafi stadium. 12 gunmen fired on a bus carrying cricketers injuring 6 cricketers & killing 6 Policemen and 2 civilians. These were the second attacks on a sports team since the Munich massacre of Israeli athletes by PLO militants in 1972.
2009 Lahore bombing
On 27 May 2009 in Lahore gunmen in a toyota van opened fire on Security officials & detonated a car bomb which flattened the Emergency response building at police HQ killing 35 people & injuring 250 others. The nearby ISI intelligence office was also damaged.
Pearl Continental hotel bombing
On 9 June 2009 in Peshawar, Pakistan the 5 star Pearl Continental hotel was bombed, causing partial collapse & killing 17 people dead & injuring 46 others. Fedayeen al-Islam, Pakistani militant group, claimed responsibility for the attack with the aim of stopping the US interference in Pakistan.
Jakarta bombings
On 17 July 2009 in Jakarta, Indonesia, the JW Marriott and Ritz-Carlton Hotels were hit 5 minutes apart by suicide bombers wounding 50 & killing 4.
Peshawar Peepal Mindi bombing
On 28 October 2009 in Peshawar, a car bomb exploded in Mina Bazar market for women and children killing 100 and injuring 200. Taliban was held responsible.
Northwest Airlines Flight 253
On 25 December 2009, there was an attempt to bomb the International Northwest Airlines Flight 253 from Amsterdam to Detroit, USA. A passenger tried to set off plastic explosives sewn to his underwear but failed resulting in flames. A Dutch passenger, tackled and restrained him as others put out the fire. Al-Qaeda claimed responsibility for the attempted bombing.
2010 Lakki Marwat suicide bombing
On 1 January 2010, Lakki Marwat in Pakistan, a suicide bomber blew up his car filled with explosives in a volleyball game. 105 people dead and 100 critically injured. The Taliban carried out the attacks in retaliation to Military clean up action.
2009 Little Rock recruiting office shooting
On June 1, 2009, in US, Abdul hakim Mujahid Muhammad, opened fire from his vehicle on a US military recruiting office in Little Rock, Arkansas killing 1 & wounding 1 soldier. He stated that the act was “for the sake of Allah, the Lord of all the world, and also a retaliation on U.S. military for killing Muslims in Afghanistan & Iraq”.
German Bakery blasts
On 13 Feb 2010, a bomb exploded at the German bakery, a famous bakery in Pune, frequented by western tourists, killing 16 & wounding 60. Indian Mujahideen operative Salman Ansari, was arrested from near Nepal border in UP & is in custody as a suspect for the Pune Blast as well as the 2008 serial Delhi blasts. Telephone intercepts revealed that Riyaz Bhatkal, the founder of IM, called up Salman Ansari to congratulate him.
